Principal ballerina, Monica Tapiador will play Aurora

Sleeping Beauty will be performed by the English Youth Ballet at Dartford’s Orchard Theatre from August 25-26.

The fairytale follows the life of Princess Aurora, who at her christening is cursed by a wicked witch,.

The witch says that Aurora will prick her finger on the needle of a spinning wheel and die. One of her fairy godmother’s then changes the curse, to say she will fall asleep for a 100 years unless the curse is broken by her ‘true love’s kiss’.

She’s then whisked off to live in a cabin in the woods with her fairy godmothers in a bid to stop the curse coming true. But their prevention doesn’t go to plan.

In the ballet, Monica Tapiador will perform the role of Aurora.

Monica is a Spanish ballerina, who before joining English Youth Ballet as a principal ballerina, she danced with international companies including La Scala in Milan and English National Ballet.

She said: “Being a prinicipal with EYB involves performing the leading roles in the company’s repetorie of five full-length classical ballets and teaching and coaching the young dancers in the cast in each city or town we visit.

“It is one of the most challenging jobs I have ever done but I love it. It is challenging because you are responsible for the progress of the young dancers and also for your own performance and the huge demands of each classical role.

“The role of Aurora is one of the most iconic roles for a female dancer in all the classical ballets. I think the main challenges is stamina and pacing yourself throughout the three acts.

“One of the toughest seciotns is the famous Rose Adage in act one as it equires a lot of good balance. Aurora must balance on one foot on pointe without the aid of her partner.

“You rely on your stomach muscles for that.”
