The show has been a hit on Cbeebies for the past 10 years

With Mister Maker set to wow Dartford crowds again next week, the show’s titular character has described playing the role as his “dream job”.

On the 10th anniversary of the show’s creation, Mister Maker & The Shapes will be performing two shows at the Orchard Theatre on Sunday, October 28.

Now a favourite among pre-school children and their parents, the show has found success off screen, carry out extensive touring across the country’s theatres.

After a decade in the role, actor and screenwriter Phil Gallagher, originally from Gillingham, is full of praise for the team around him.

The former BBC Radio Kent presenter said: “It sounds a cliché, but being Mister Maker is my dream job. I always wanted to be a children’s television presenter - from an early age - and to be one now, on a show that encourages fun and creativity, is a dream come true.

“I have always loved making things and being creative. From a very young age. And now as a 40-year-old big kid, I am no different. My house is covered in glitter, sticky tape and googly eyes, but I don’t mind, because arts and craft has become my life. Being Mister Maker is a fantastic job because when I’m not touring, I put my producer hat on and work on our next show, song or arty creation.

“I am part of a very small team that creates the TV show. We all pitch in ideas and help each other. We have a wonderful art team who are so passionate about making the best show we can and their ideas for the programme are always incredible.”

Next week, the show will also visit the Assembly Hall in Tunbridge Wells on Thursday, October 26.

Ahead of the two Kent dates, the former Rainham Mark Grammar School and Canterbury Christ Church University student described what the live show has to offer.

He said: “We have a great theatre show for you - it is a big, bright, bold and happy live party, celebrating creativity and fun.

“It has art at its heart but also includes a lot of the things that make live theatre exciting - singing, dancing, audience interaction and The Shapes.

“When the Shapes take to the stage, that is my favourite part of the show. The noise levels in the theatre increase...and then of course everyone starts singing.

“One of the things that makes me most proud is that wherever we perform our live show, children and grown-ups give us such a warm and excited response. It is heart-warming to hear the reactions of the crowd and I am so thankful for their support.”
