Famously held captive for more than three years, he’ll be in conversation with Gavin Esler

Former envoy of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Terry Waite, will be the next special guest as part of the University of Kent’s In Conversation series.

Famously successful for negotiating the freedom of hostages in Iran and Libya in the early 1980s, he himself was taken hostage in the Lebanon and held captive for 1,763 days, finally being released in 1991.

The humanitarian will appear at the Gulbenkian on October 3 at 6,30pm.

In Conversation events consist of an informal conversation between the guest and the university’s chancellor, former BBC journalist and author Gavin Esler.

Audience members can participate in the conversations by submitting questions in advance via Twitter using #GavinAsks or email at events@kent.ac.uk.

Upcoming other guests includ political activist and commentator Owen Jones on October 23 and Michael Gove on November 3.
