West End smash War Horse has confirmed it is set to gallop back into the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury in 2019, after almost completely selling out the opening month-long stint of shows.

The production opened earlier this month and continues at the Kent venue until October 14 on what is the first leg of its UK tour.

Widely acclaimed, only a handful of tickets for the run remain, but theatre bosses have now revealed the National Theatre production will be back for another string of shows in February and March of 2018.

The dates are February 27 to March 16 and tickets go on sale on Tuesday, October 3 to Marlowe Friends and on general sale on October 17.

On returning to the Marlowe, Kash Bennett, producer for National Theatre Productions said: “Opening our 10th anniversary tour at the Marlowe Theatre has been a fantastic experience; a real collaboration between the Marlowe and the NT. We’re delighted that we’ll be bringing the show back in 2019 to give audiences another opportunity to introduce this beloved show to a whole new generation of theatre-goers, and for returning audiences to revisit Michael Morpurgo’s beautiful story.”

War Horse has been seen by more than seven million people around the world, and completed an eight-year run at London’s New London Theatre in March.

The production has won 25 awards, including the Tony Award for best play on Broadway.

Nick Stafford’s adaptation of former Kent school teacher Michael Morpurgo’s book tells the story of a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey.

The story is set against the backdrop of the First World War.

It features puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping horses to life on the stage.

War Horse premiered at the National Theatre in 2007, where it played for two seasons before opening at the New London Theatre in 2009.

Since then, the production has been seen in 97 cities in 10 different countries, including shows on Broadway, in Toronto and Berlin.
