Lisa and Rob Edmonds, 39 and 42 respectively, bought a property in Dorset Crescent, Gravesend, more than a year ago and hope to make it disabled-friendly for their son Cameron, known as Cam, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy,

The serious and rare genetic disorder causes progressive muscle loss.

Added strain

Having bought the bunglalow in October 2010 they have desperately been trying to renovate it ever since, while living in a two bedroom terrace house in Chatham which does not suit Cam’s needs.

Mrs Edmonds said: “I cannot even begin to tell you the difference being in the bungalow will make to our lives. It will change Cam’s life.

“Just for our little boy to be able to have a shower, something most people take for granted, will be amazing.

“Bathing him is a painfully long process at the moment.

“He has enough to deal with simply living with his condition everyday as it is, without the added strain of being stuck here, where he can’t even walk to his own room without having to climb stairs first.”

The couple want to see Cam settled in a home, free from stress.

Since September he has also been attending Thamesview School, in Gravesend, after his parents were impressed by their commitment to children like Cam.

She added: “We are turning to the community for help. We are not asking for money, although if people want to make a donation we are setting this up, but more than anything we need supplies and people’s time.”

Her electrician husband Rob has been doing much of the work but with a slipped disc and growing costs the process has been slow.

She added: “Each day we have to watch Cam fade a little bit more and just want to give him the home he deserves.”

This Saturday volunteers are urged to attend to help with moving rubble and general work.

If anyone is able to help, lend expertise, time or donate anything please email lisajaneedmonds@hotmail.co.uk.

Mrs Edmonds is also promoting a charity single Emmins Nobody Knows Their Time which will be available to download on itunes on March 1st.

All proceeds will be donated to research projects voted for by families of children suffering from muscular dystrophy.
