Beccehamians RFC 15-22 Vigo RFC
17:14 31 January 2011
Despite a furious late rally by the home side, Vigo RFC did enough to record a good win at Sparrow’s Den in their Kent One clash at Beccehamians RFC, writes Trevor Newnham.
Vigo started confidently and were soon breaking through a hesitant defence, with Charlie Watmough and Robbie Hayes prominent in the early exchanges. However, Vigo took an early lead after a blinding break by Watmough saw quickly recycled ball feed Matt Thorogood crash over. Dave Winstone added the extras before a yellow card for a flurry of punching gave Vigo numerical advantage. They utilised it with a superb individual try by Dave Dunn. The home side hit back with a Tom Parker penalty before the break, but Vigo had the lead – and the slope – in the second-half.
Their ambitions were thwarted however by an improvement in Beccs’ kicking game and an increase in forward intensity. Home scrum-half George Scott scuttling over for a try and Parker’s conversion narrowed the lead. However, scores for Toby Skinner and a second for Thorogood looked to have put Vigo out of sight, before a late onslaught brought a deserved try for Michael O’Hare as the visitors eventually claimed the win.
In the Shepherd Neame Mid Kent and East Sussex League, Canterbury Jack Division ‘A’ Vigo’s ‘A’ XV lost 12-11 to Weavering firsts.
