Costica Ciapa pleaded guilty to death by careless driving

A Gravesend man who killed a 56-year-old pedestrian in Northfleet last year has pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving.

Costica Ciapa of Wellington Street, Gravesend, was sentenced to 12 months in jail at Maidstone Crown Court on Tuesday, September 20.

The 27-year-old will be deported to his home country of Romania after serving his sentence.

The sentence comes after Ciapa hit 57-year-old Rimantas Karvelis in London Road, Northfleet, in October last year.

Mr Karvelis had been visiting the UK to see one of his two sons.

He was taken to a London hospital with multiple injuries, but died on November 3.

Officers arrested Ciapa, of Wellington Street, Gravesend, later that day, after he failed to stop at the scene, or report the incident to police.

The car was found abandoned in Grange Road, Northfleet.

In court, Ciapa admitted to causing death by careless driving as well as dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision, failing to report a collision and driving without a license or insurance.

Det const Aaron Hammond of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Costica Ciapa acted appallingly. As the collision occurred he would have known what had happened.

“The windscreen of the car was destroyed and yet he still continued to drive away and made no effort to assist Mr Karvelis and showed no attempt at doing the right thing and handing himself in to police.

“I would like to thank Mr Karvelis’ family in conducting themselves in such a composed manner during a time which had a devastating impact upon their lives.”
