Two incidents in a matter of days sparked hours of delays for motorists

An online petition is calling on the government to carry out a public inquiry on the so-called ‘botched’ Dartford crossing.

Motorists have faced hours of delays on the crossing in the past few days.

On Sunday, safety fears closed both tunnels into Essex for more than four hours.

Then on Thursday, an accident on the other side of the river closed both tunnels for most of the day.

Since then the petition ‘Begin a public inquiry into the performance of the northbound Dartford Crossing’, has gained more than 6,000 signatures.

It comes just days after Dartford MP Gareth Johnson warned someone will die in traffic at the crossing.

The petition reads: “Road users & hauliers have been suffering the incompetence of the ‘new & improved’ northbound Dartford River Crossing for too long.

“After the multi-million pound improvement works were completed road users have had to bear the brunt of a botched scheme which shows no evidence of improvement.”

Should the petition reach 10,000 signatures, the government will have to issue a response.

Should it reach 100,000 signatures the petition would be considered for debate in parliament.

Highways England have been approached for comment.
