SQUEAKY comedian and reality TV champion Joe Pasquale is looking forward to his role in a swashbuckling pantomime this year.

The 47-year-old, who won I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here in 2004, will play the hapless Smee in Peter Pan.

J M Barrie's tale of the boy who never grew up will be performed at the Orchard Theatre, Home Gardens, Dartford in December.

It is being staged by Qdos Pantomimes, the same team that produced last year's production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and stars one of the UK's most popular comedians in Pasquale, who is also directing the show.

The comic spoke to Kentish Times Newspapers when he appeared at Chatham Dockyard to launch the production.

He said: "I am very much looking forward to it. It will be a challenge because, as well as starring in it, I am directing, but I like playing Smee and the beauty of the story is that it is one that kids know from start to finish.

"I have played in Dartford as a stand up countless times, and Gravesend as well. I have lived over this way for a few years now and I love living here. When I was little, I used to come over this way and go strawberry picking with my mum and dad, so I have always enjoyed it.

"The audiences are fantastic, and being local, coming to Dartford is really nice for me."

Mr Pasquale first shot to fame in 1987, when he appeared on television talent show New Faces, and what followed was many successful years as a stand up. He says he enjoys the change of performing in a pantomime.

He said: "Panto is a completely different vehicle to doing stand up, television or game shows, because it is the only show where the audience is part of it as well.

"You can rehearse the musical or the play and know exactly how it is going to go, but with panto there is always a member of the cast missing, which is the audience. It is so interactive and that is the way it should be.

"It is a completely different medium and one of the reasons why I enjoy doing it."

In 2004, Mr Pasquale was crowned King of the Jungle after taking part in the ITV jungle reality show I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here, alongside Paul Burrell and Janet Street Porter.

He said: "It was great to get away from the phone for three weeks to be honest. It was like picking 10 strange people and saying, 'do you want to go on holiday?.'

"But I didn't find it too tough. What you see is what you get on there. You can't just nip over to the hotel to get a kebab. But I absolutely loved it, it was a great experience."

l Peter Pan runs at the Orchard theatre from Friday, December 5, 2008 to Sunday, January 11, 2009.

Tickets can be booked by calling the box office on 01322 220000 or visiting www.orchardtheatre.co.uk.
