An original 1948 Olympic Torch that the late Dartford athlete Alf Bennett carried almost 60 years ago was paraded through Gravesend Rugby Club on Thursday by his grandson Martin Goodall.

The club’s torch relay - a precursor to the real thing next week - was followed by a sports tournament involving 120 children from Gravesham schools who played touch-rugby, hockey and petanque and were treated to performances from Ifield School’s choir, Kings Farm’s Khaos dancers and Gravesend Grammar’s drumming band.

Organiser Jamie Owen said: “The enthusiasm of the children and the guests was tremendous and we didn’t let a little bit of rain spoil a great day.”
