Councillor Jordan Meade suggested changing the name to Gravesend-upon-Thames

The proposal to change Gravesend’s name was ‘nothing more than suggestion’, the borough’s tourism councillor has said.

Jordan Meade, Tory cabinet member for Heritage, Tourism, the Arts and Young People made the proposal to rename the town Gravesend-upon-Thames at a cabinet meeting on Monday.

The proposal would see the town follow in the footsteps of Staines, which was renamed Staines-upon-Thames in 2012, in a bid to bring in tourism.

Gravesham is currently the fourth highest net-spender of tourism in the county, and at the same meeting considered proposals to cut £195,000 from its tourism budget.

No decision has been made on whether the cuts will be made.

“When I made this suggestion at cabinet, it was nothing more than a suggestion for the officers to go away and consult upon” said Cllr Meade.

“It was done with the aim of promoting our borough’s river heritage, such as Pocahontas, the world’s oldest cast iron pier, our new pontoon, St Andrew’s Art Centre and Clarendon Gardens to name but a few.”
