A music group that offers lessons to young people is facing being homeless – for the first time in its 26-year history.

The Knights Academy of Music and Performing Arts holds lessons twice a week to teach youngsters aged between 6-15 how to read music and play a variety of instruments.

The volunteer teachers are themselves musicians, and run the group at an affordable level for most youngsters who want to join them.

For many years, they had held their rehearsals in a unit in Northfleet but in January, re-located to Shears Green Junior School, White Avenue, for a six month tenancy.

They are now desperately looking for a permanent space for their Tuesday and Thursday practice nights, held from 6.30pm – 8pm.

Musical director Paul Richards, who himself learnt to play music with the group when it was a marching band, said: “Our young musicians are keen to learn how to play the instruments and learn to read music as part of the group - sometimes on a one-to-one level when a bit more instruction is needed.

“We’re teaching them not only how to play music and music theory, but life skills – confidence, team work, participation, attention, listening and respect.

“By playing music together, they learn that we’re stronger together – brass, drumline and percussion.”

The group is regularly booked for events including summer fairs and local events.

The group are currently based in Northfleet, and hold lessons twice a week. Picture: Knights Academy of Music The group are currently based in Northfleet, and hold lessons twice a week. Picture: Knights Academy of Music

Last year they were part of the Northfleet Carnival, Gravesham Christmas lights switch-on performances and performed carols at a local garden centre.

They are ideally looking for a large hall to play in as a full ensemble, but also need a couple of smaller rooms.

Mr Richards added: “A school would be ideal, as we could use the hall for the full ensemble and a couple of classrooms for the sections, but there may be other venues that have a similar set-up that we could consider.”

If you have a venue that would be suitable, are able to suggest one or would like to talk about corporate sponsorship, contact Paul Richards on 07875 415852 or info@knightsacademy.org.uk.

The group can be followed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Knightsmusicacademy/.

Having a brand new kitchen is something that lots of people want but can only dream of. Sadly keeping up to date and making our living spaces as nice as they can be is a costly and incredibly stressful business. Even a fresh coat of paint makes all the difference but isn’t easy or quick.
