The walk took place on Friday

Record numbers helped to raise money for a local hospice at a twilight walk on Friday.

More than 600 people turned out for ellenor’s annual Twilight Walk through Gravesend, turning the streets of the town orange as young and old undertook either an 8km or 12km route.

The charity is hoping to have raised around £40,000 from the event.

The emotional walk sees supporters take on the challenge in memory of loved ones who have used the hospice’s services.

Charity patron Tom Parker from The Wanted and his fiancée Kelsey Hardwick helped get walkers on their way, before setting off themselves from Gravesend’s Cyclopark.

The boyband star said: “Kelsey and I loved taking part in ellenor’s Twilight Walk again this year.

“We met lots of ellenor supporters and experience the great atmosphere which the walk brings to Gravesend.

“I’m proud to be a patron of ellenor and know that events like this are key in raising vital funds to support families facing terminal illness.”

Participants donned their orange t-shirts for the walk, writing moving tributes of remembrance on their backs.

“My mum died on May 17 from Cerebral Lymphoma and, without ellenor’s help and support, we would not have been able to get her home for her final few days of life.” said first-time walker Dena Bennett, who took on the walk with her daughter Candice.

She continued: “Thanks to ellenor she was able to die with dignity and in the comfort of her own home with us by her side. My daughters and I will be forever in ellenor’s debt.”

Fundraising director at ellenor, Rachel Holweger spoke of the ‘moving’ tributes seen around the walk.

She said: “The support we had for our Twilight Walk this year was incredible - from the walkers themselves, right through to our volunteers, sponsors and the people of Gravesend who really got behind the event.

“The messages which people wrote on the back of their t-shirts were very moving and we hope that, as well as raising money, everyone created some really precious memories.”

The ellenor winter walk is taking place on Sunday December 11 at Shorne Woods Country Park. Visit for more information.
