Detectives hunting a reported arsonist in Dartford have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to.

Police were called at 10.45pm on September 3 when it was reported that a person was seen acting suspiciously outside flats in Kent Road.

The man was reported to have set fire to the front of gas meters, which were housed in a small wooden cupboard, before walking off in the direction of the Westgate car park.

The fire was put out by a person living in the building, before police and fire crews attended the scene.

Nobody was injured in the blaze.

Officers would also like to talk to a woman who was seen hugging the man in the CCTV before she went into a local nightclub.

She is described as white, aged in her twenties, with brown hair which was tied up and was wearing a black top with a floral pattern on with black trousers, carrying a black bag.

Detective constable Phil Pead said: “Setting fire to gas meters could have resulted in serious injuries to the occupants of the surrounding properties and it was only by sheer luck that no one was injured and this fire was found by a resident and put out.

“I would encourage anyone who recognises this man to get in touch.”

Witnesses or anyone with information can call the appeal line on 01474 366149 quoting reference XY/34806/16.

Alternatively call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
