Three people have been prosecuted for littering in Gravesend

Three people have been ordered to pay a combined total of more than £3,500 for littering.

The prosecutions, at Medway Magistrates Court, come as Gravesham Borough Council looks to clamp down on the offence.

Among the offenders was 20-year-old Michael Finch of Wallis Park, Gravesend.

Finch was caught dropping drinks cans, a lollipop stock and a plastic shoe hanger on four separate occasions.

He was ordered to pay £1,497 including costs.

Lenny Scamp of Stonebridge Road, Northfleet was also due to appear in court on October 10.

The 26-year-old was caught dropping cigarette ends and paper on three separate occasions.

Including costs, he must pay £1,050.

The third person to be prosecuted was 23-year-old Michal Gulas of Wrotham Road, Gravesend.

Gulas dropped a child’s bike, black bin bags, a cigarette end and a CD player on three different occasions.

Magistrates ordered him to pay £1,050 including costs.

Each defendant failed to attend the court, so in their absence were found guilty based on the provided evidence.

Councillor Sandra Garside, cabinet member for community services said: “We take littering very seriously and these prosecutions show that we will not tolerate people littering in our borough. If you are caught, you must pay; otherwise you’ll end up going to court.

“Prosecutions take up a lot of time and money, but if that’s what it takes to make Gravesham the best possible place for our residents, we will do it.
