A Gravesend blood donor has been commended for saving hundreds of lives after giving blood for 45 years.

Anthony Holdstock, 65, was one of two blood donors from Kent who were recognised by the NHS Blood and Transplant for their loyalty and commitment at a ceremony on September 9 in Green Park, London.

Mr Holdstock was honoured with a commemorative medal alongside 30 donors from across London and surrounding areas - all of whom had donated at least 1000 times and had collectively saved up to 9,000 lives.

Just one percent of blood donors reach 100 donations. Each blood donation can potentially save the lives of up to three people, so if a donor has given blood 100 times they could have helped save the lives of up to 300 patients.

Speaking of his loyalty, Anthony said: “I started giving blood when a colleague from work, encouraged a few of us work mates to donate.

“Donating blood makes me feel good about myself, knowing that I’ve impacted someone’s life and helped them to live on.”

The guest speaker at the ceremony was Yaser Martini, who sadly lost his two year old daughter, Margot, in October 2014 after a 14 month battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML).

Yaser said: “Margot regularly needed both platelets and red cell donations to keep her going. We launched a campaign called Team Margot to help find her perfect match - asking the general public to do something amazing and register as a potential stem cell donor. We very much encourage people to give blood too.

“It’s remarkable – these are people who have consistently been donating blood for over 20 years. Thank you to all the blood donors out there and please keep up the good work.”

Michelle Laserna of NHS Blood and Transplant said: “These loyal donors are very special to us, which is why such an event gives us the opportunity to say a real heartfelt thanks.

“Between them, these donors have saved thousands of lives, and improved the lives of countless others. We hope these donors will inspire others to become blood donors. “
