MPs from across Kent and Bromley have united to demand an extension of Crossrail to Ebbsfleet in the next south eastern rail franchise.

Some 12 local MPs wrote a six-page letter to rail minister Paul Maynard in response to the government’s recent consultation into the future of train services in the region.

The group, who are all Conservatives, outlined concerns regarding issues such as overcrowding and capacity and giving passengers flexibility on services to the capital, after the consultation proposed trains on the Dartford line terminate at London Cannon Street only, rather than several different termini.

The MPs also called on the government to ensure high standards of customer service and passenger facilities as well as the extension of Crossrail - now known as the Elizabeth Line - from Abbey Wood in Bexley down to north Kent.

Maidstone and the Weald MP Helen Grant was one of the signatories on the letter.

She said: “Together, several Kent MPs have compiled a comprehensive document for consideration by hovernment in its deliberations over the forthcoming franchise bid for the county.

“It covers not only the train operators, but also issues for Network Rail to address and extends to a demand for Crossrail to be extended to Ebbsfleet, a major strategic step for Kent and for Maidstone in particular, as a link to its existing high speed service from Maidstone West.

“Together with my Kent colleagues I will be monitoring this franchise process very carefully.”
