A month-old baby was the victim of a ‘frenzied, brutal and repeated assault’ causing at least 21 separate injuries, a court heard on Tuesday.

Nathan Rawling, of Gravesend, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
John O’Higgins, prosecuting, told Maidstone Crown Court that on December 1, 2011, a 31-day-old baby was taken to Darent Valley Hospital with life-threatening injuries including 26 rib fractures, both collar bones fractured, a fractured arm, both lungs punctured, and severe bruising to his chest, legs and genital area.
On arrival at the hospital the baby’s heart stopped and doctors spent 10 minutes resuscitating him.
Speaking on the opening day of the trial, which is expected to last at least three weeks, Mr O’Higgins said: “The baby was at the point of death and only survived because of the swift intervention of the doctors and nurses.”
Mr Rawling, 36, previously of St Gregory’s Crescent, denies the charge.
The court heard that Mr Rawling originally told police officers the injuries were caused by his resuscitation attempts when the baby stopped breathing.
Mr O’Higgins told the jury that medical experts were unanimous in rejecting this explanation.
He said: “It may be that he tried to save the baby and perform CPR but only because moments before he had almost killed him.”
The prosecution claim Mr Rawling inflicted the injuries after the baby urinated on him.
The case continues.
