A Port of London Authority worker crushed by a barge in Denton Wharf, Gravesend, is out of intensive care.

Michael Russell suffered horrific injuries in the incident on January 18 and is in the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel.

A statement from the authority said: “Last week there was an important step forward in Michael’s recovery when he was moved out of intensive care into the high dependency unit at the Royal London. Michael’s injuries were very serious and he still faces many challenges in the weeks and months ahead – including a prolonged period in hospital. But, with the close support of his family, Michael continues to make progress.”

An investigation into the accident is under way.
