Grants are being awarded by Tesco using money from the 5p carrier bag charge

Gravesham Council is appealing to residents to help it bag a £12,000 grant for an environmental project in Gravesend.

The money would be used to create a landscaped area with accessible seating at Clifton Marine Riverside Walk, which borders the Imperial Retail Park.

If the full award is granted, the project would include history boards, an outdoor telescope, and better CCTV and lighting.

Clifton was once home to swimming baths with oriental architecture, but they fell into disuse, and the area is currently subjected to graffiti, littering and vandalism.

The funding is being provided by Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative and has been raised through the 5p plastic carrier bag charge.

Voting is open in Tesco stores from October 31 until November 13. Customers will be able to cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out each time they shop.

Lindsey Crompton, head of community at Tesco, said: “The first round of the Bags of Help initiative was a fantastic success.

“In total 1,170 community groups were awarded £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000 - that’s a massive £11.7 million being invested into local projects.

“We are already seeing some great results from groups transforming their own environmental and greenspace areas.

“We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for round two. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see them come to life in hundreds of communities.”
