Weather chiefs say lightning may also disrupt power networks over the coming days

A flood warning has been issued for the south east with heavy rain and lightning expected to hit some areas of the county tonight.

Though today’s daytime weather is expected to reach highs of 29°C, the Met Office has declared a yellow rain warning, as homes and businesses could be affected by power disruption.

A spokesperson said: “Thundery showers are expected to push north across southern parts of the UK through this evening, perhaps turning more widespread towards midnight.

“Although many places won’t see these showers, there is a chance of localised flooding of homes, businesses and susceptible roads.

“Frequent lightning may be an additional hazard with potential disruption to power networks. Similarly, but very locally, hail may cause impacts.”

As the week progresses, intense downpours associated with the thunderstorms may see 30mm of rain fall in just an hour in some areas, with 50mm expected over two or three hours.

The spokesperson added: “As is usual in this type of situation there is considerable uncertainty in the areas that are most likely to be affected.

“Temperatures are also not expected to drop below 15°C causing the air to be humid immediately following downpour.”
