Struggling schools and new teachers will now look to a local school for help.

Under a national initiative, schools and would-be teachers can now receive support from Wilmington Grammar School for Girls.

The school has been chosen as a national support school, as well as a teaching school, meaning it will help to recruit and train new entrants to the field.

Headteacher Donna Lodge is one of nearly 100 people in her position to be appointed as a national leader of education.

She commented: “It is an exciting time to be working in the educational arena with so many opportunities to undertake school to school support.

“Whenever schools work together it tends to benefit both parties, as there are endless ways of supporting students to reach their potential.”

Roger Pope, chair of the National College for Teaching and Leadership, said: “Teaching schools and NLEs are at the heart of school improvement. They’re supporting other schools, attracting and training the best new teachers and developing the next generation of leaders.

“At NCTL, we want to do all we can to support their work. “
