Dwain Chambers and Adam Gemili’s bid for glory in the 4x100m bid ended in bitter disappointment as Great Britain were disqualified in the first round for an illegal baton exchange.

Daniel Talbot failed to pass the baton to Adam Gemili before the yellow mark, and despite Gemili crossing the line in second place the result counted for nothing.

Gemili said: “Maybe I went early or too hard. It’s disappointing as we could have been in contention for the final.”

It was a repeat of Great Britain’s Beijing disappointment of four years ago, when they were also disqualified in their heat.

Jamaica stormed home in first place, while Great Britain’s second place went to Canada.
