Dami Bakare produce a solid performance in Team GB's defeat to Argentina

Another battling effort from Team GB men’s volleyball team is in vain as Argentina take victory.

Team GB men’s volleyball bowed out of the Olympics with a straight sets loss at the hands of Argentina today.

Their opposition, ranked eighth in the world, forged into an early 8-2 lead as GB started slowly.

Mitcham’s Dami Bakare gave Britain a boost with a fine spike and former London Docklands player Nathan French picked up another point as the hosts rallied.

Another spike from Bakare pulled the deficit back to just three at 12-9, but that hope disappeared as Argentina took hold of the set by the scruff of their neck to forge into a 17-11 lead, which they turned into a 25-18 opening set win.

GB won the first point of the second set, but coach Harry Brokking called a time-out with the hosts 6-3 down.

Mark McGivern’s unconventional serve gave Britain renewed hope as they picked up four points in succession to move back into contention at 13-11 and 14-13 down.

Argentina survived the scare though to move 20-15 ahead and sealed the set again 25-18.

And despite a mammoth effort from the 92nd ranked team they were unable to gain a foothold in the third, as their chances of at least gaining a set at the Games all but vanished very quickly.

They went 4-2 down before Brokking called another time-out and although keeping themselves in the set, the Brits couldn’t find the consistency to pull together a series of points.

With the writing on the wall GB lost another point for their persistent protesting to the line judge and that moved Argentina to within a point of the match, which they sealed in fashion to complete a clean sweep with a 25-15 third set win.
