Team GB’s men brought the curtain down on their water polo campaign with a noble defeat to Montenegro.

The ever-improving host nation were resilient defending the centre of their goal, but were punished on power plays as the eastern European side sealed their progress from Group B.

Montenegro quickly moved into a three-goal lead with Aleksander Ivovic, Vladimir Gojkovic and Boris Zlokovic all finding the net.

Adam Scholefield reduced the deficit in the final minute of the first quarter, but there was still time for Zlokovic to restore the three-goal cushion.

Montenegro pulled further ahead in the second period through Nikola Janovic and a long range effort from Predrag Jokic.

Glen Robinson hit back, as GB finally got the better of the Montenegro defence to convert a power play.

And GB’s third from Rob Parker was sandwiched by goals from Aleksandar Radovic and Zlokovic who completed his hat-trick.

A tentative start to the second half saw almost seven scoreless minutes pass before West Wickham’s Sean King set up Craig Figes for GB’s fourth.

But Montenegro ended the home crowd’s faint hopes of seeing a brave fight-back when goals from Radovic and Mladan Janovic took Montenegro to double figures going into the final period.

The fourth quarter began with Montenegro adding a controversial 11th. Antonio Petrovic scored after the referee appeared to blow his whistle, leading to vociferous protests from GB coach Cristian Iordache and the crowd.

But the whistle had gone for a previous infringement, the goal stood and Iordache earned a yellow card for venting his frustration.

Parker hit the post with a penalty for GB as luck appeared to evade the home side in their final match of the Games.

Ivovic scored a simple breakaway goal past Carshalton-born Matt Holland and Radovic completed his treble for goal 13.

At full-time the packed Water Polo Arena stood to applaud the host team and will no doubt hope the sport can gain the investment required to ensure Team GB have a presence in Rio 2016.
