London-born Pattinson, who has recently been through a painful break-up with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart, has been cast as the male lead opposite Naomi Watts in Werner Herzog’s new historical drama ‘Queen Of The Desert’.

The 26-year-old star will play T.E. Lawrence, a British Army officer whose writing earned him international recognition under the name Lawrence of Arabia.

O’Toole famously played Lawrence in David Lean’s 1962 classic film Lawrence Of Arabia, and Pattinson, who grew up in Barnes in south-west London will hope to live up to his predecessor.

Herzog is hoping to begin filming the project in the autumn.

The news comes after Pattinson made his first public appearance since Stewart’s cheating scandal broke.
