To get to the set Russell has to pass volcanic ash and negotiate a steep climb.

In a series of posts on his twitter account, he wrote: “I’m living on a vast plain of volcanic ash in the lee of a volcanic glacier. The commute to work is a hike up a mountain ... Wind tears the volcanic desert, ash and sand arcing in 40 foot waves across the plain, in the distance the sonambulent glacier leaks #inmyeyes (sic)”

Russell also had to brave icy water for a scene for the movie at the most “most dangerous beach in Iceland”.

He revealed in a tweet: “Monday, part of a scene I went for a dip in the ocean, I can’t describe the shock of cold, told this morning “most dangerous beach in Iceland” (sic)”

Russell stars in the epic movie with Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ray Winstone. It is scheduled for release in 2014.
