Ian Watkins - better known as Steps star H – had been due to tread the boards of Dartford’s Orchard Theatre two years ago but the tour got unexpectedly pulled.
However, this October, Watkins will have a chance to show local fans what they missed.
The Welsh singer is currently starring as Joseph in the famed production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on a UK tour.
It is a musical that is close to his heart having first appeared in the show when he was just nine – before first starring as Joseph in 2005.
“I adore the show,” he said. “It was actually the first ever show I did.
“I played the youngest brother Benjamin and I used to sit in the wings and watch – it was just my dream job. I loved it.”
Watkins has appeared in a whole host of productions during his four decades in the entertainment industry. None, though, have been quite so demanding as his latest role it seems.
“I spend most of this show in a loin cloth, so I had to really buff up,” revealed Watkins.
“I had three months with a trainer. He had me running up hills with a back pack full of rocks; running through the woods with a parachute on my back. He murdered me, he killed me.”
“I am thankful for it though – I am actually the fittest I’ve ever been.”
See Ian at the Orchard from Tuesday, October 15 to Saturday, October 29. Visit orchardtheatre.co.uk for more details.
