BASED on a teen novel by Stephenie Meyer, Twilight tells the story of an unlikely love affair which blossoms between a vampire and a teenage girl.

Bella (Kristen Stewart) is a chaste, lonely 17-year-old who has moved to a new town to live with her divorced dad, Charlie (Billy Burke), who works as the local police chief. One day in the canteen of her new high school she catches sight of an unusually pallid but unusually handsome young man named Edward (Robert Pattinson) who can't seem to keep his eyes off her. The two don't hit it off immediately but after Edward saves her life a few times using mysterious powers she sees him in a new light. It doesn't take her long to realise he is in fact a vampire.

Disappointingly, many of the well-known aspects of the vampire myth have been jettisoned - there are no coffins and no metamorphosing into bat. By watering down their threat and making them more human the vampires are sanitised to the point that all their erotic allure and any sense of danger is totally lost. The result is akin to Dawson's Creek with fangs.

Twilight opens in cinemas tomorrow. Certificate 12A.
