Bystanders watched in horror as a lorry ploughed through school gates and into a tree – just minutes after children had left the building.

The crash happened at Northfleet Technology College in Colyer Road at about 3.35pm yesterday. Police believe the lorry had been left unattended without the handbrake properly secured, causing it to roll into the site.

Kent Fire and Rescue were on the scene, but no one was injured.

The driver of the lorry is speaking to police, but has not been arrested.

‏Twitter user @oxley_snr said: “Just been involved in one of the strangest things in my life.

“Watched as 40ft lorry ploughed through the school gates and me trying to smash open the window as petrol leaking everywhere.

“So lucky no kids there only 20 minutes before and I can’t imagine!”
