A vulnerable 88-year-old man was the victim of a vicious trick by an alleged burglar who stole £2,000 as well as a passport, cheque book and pension book from the man's home.

The elderly owner of the house in North Road, Dartford, says that on October 29 at about 3pm he got off the bus at West Hill and was approached by a man who claimed he had fitted a fireplace in the man’s house previously.

The victim did not recognise him and walked off but when he arrived home at around 4pm the same man was at his front door and asking to look at his fire.

When the pensioner open his front door the con man said he could smell gas and entered the property despite protests by the owner, and after asking to use the toilet the man left the house with something under his arm.

The offender was white, about 40 years old with short fair hair.

Anyone with information should call Kent Police on 101 quoting reference XY/32897/12.
