The leader of the council has launched a scathing attack on the town’s electricity distributor following a series of power cuts to town centre businesses during the busiest time of the year.

Gravesham Borough Council leader Mike Snelling criticised UK Power Networks for a series of power cuts recently on New Road affecting businesses such as fashion store New Look,

He said: “Disruption of this kind to businesses and the public is totally unacceptable especially in the run up to Christmas and is causing serious concern to the council and local businesses. I am pressing UK Power Networks to swiftly resolve this matter.”

The power company is carrying out repairs today and yesterday and apologised for the problems.

A spokesperson said: “UK Power Networks is sorry for the problems the businesses in Gravesend town centre are experiencing.

“The recent power interruptions were due to intermittent faults on the low voltage underground cables.

“When we dig to expose a faulty cable either side of the fault is inspected for signs of deterioration and replaced if necessary.”

He added that following the repairs earlier in the week, the company is expecting a reliable service to resume.

“We are sorry for any losses which business customers incurred during this period, but in common with all other UK electricity distribution companies UK Power Networks’ Terms of Connection exclude liability for such losses,” he said.
