Dartford’s sporting hero of 2012 Adam Gemili has been invited to turn on the town’s Christmas lights.

The 19-year-old sprinter, who made it to the semi-finals of the 100m at the Olympic Games this summer, will be joined by Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates.

The event on Saturday 17 November in the High Street will begin with music at 2.30pm followed by this year’s guests taking to the stage along with the Mayor and Father Christmas.

The lights will be switched on at 5.15pm.

Councillor Andy Lloyd, portfolio holder for leisure and events, said, “The Big Christmas Switch-On is always a hugely popular event and we hope this year’s will be bigger and better than ever. It’s great to see the smiles and festive spirit the event brings.”
