Fires were deliberately started at the Medway Maritime and Kent and Canterbury hospitals on Wednesday (29) and Thursday (30).

Thomas Ashcroft, 34, of no fixed address, appeared before Canterbury Magistrates on Monday (3) to face three charges of arson with intent in relation to the fires, including one at the Hilton Hotel in Sheffield.

He was remanded in custody until September 17 when he will appear before Canterbury Crown Court.

Staff at Darent Valley had been told to be “extra vigilant”, a hospital spokesman said.
