A WOMAN was seriously injured and her baby son hurt after the car she was driving careered off a motorway and down an embankment.

The crash happened on the coast-bound carriage way of the M2 motorway at about 6.30pm on Saturday, between junctions two and three.

The woman, thought to be from the Gravesend area, was taken to the Royal London Hospital after being cut free from the wreckage of her black Range Rover by firefighters from Thames-side and Medway.

Her toddler son was also pulled from the wreckage but suffered only minor cuts and bruises.

The motorway was closed in both directions after the crash to allow the Kent Air Ambulance to land at the scene but she was taken to hospital by land ambulance.

The road was reopened at around 10.15pm on Saturday.

Police say the woman is in a stable condition in hospital.
