In a desperately disappointing season, hard done-by fans of Ebbsfleet United might have been wondering what the next calamity to strike their team would be.

They would probably not have put money on their game at Barrow being delayed by 90 minutes due to a baked beans spillage on the M6.

But that’s exactly what happened last night as the team was held up on its way to Cumbria. Yes, that is the 635 mile round trip to north-west England on a Wednesday night and 10 intrepid fans had a very late night.

The lorry crashed and shed its load between junctions 22 and 23 near Newton-le-Willows in Merseyside and as far as strange delays go it will be hard to better that.

Fan Jeff Chick said: “Yesterday was long,” while fellow supported Joe Gildewell said he stayed overnight in nearby Lancaster and added, “it was a nightmare.

“Considering the late arrival and quick warm-up the team played very well.”

Chairwoman Jessica McQueen tweeted: “No idea how everyone at Barrow feels, but I’m shattered. Could not be more proud. After the past seven days to show such character.”

To compound a miserable evening, Ebbsfleet conceded a late equaliser against their relegation rivals to draw 1-1 when the game finally finished at 11pm, leaving them 10 points adrift of safety in the Blue Square Bet Premier.
