THE body of a pensioner who vanished a week earlier has been recovered from the River Thames.

On Saturday, shortly before 2pm, the body of a man thought to be Richard Graydon, 81, was lifted from the icy waters in Gravesend.

Kent police are now investigating but early inquiries confirm that the body recovered was that of Mr Graydon, who disappeared from his home in London on May 1. Newham police and Scotland Yard put out an alert on Wednesday, May 6 after his family alerted them that he was missing.

Police had placed the missing person in the "High Risk" category after his family went five days without hearing from him.

Mr Graydon, who lives close to West Ham United's ground at Upton Park, last spoke to family on the telephone on the afternoon of May 1.

It is believed he was wearing a dark khaki bomber jacket with zip front M&S Autograph brand when he left home to go shopping.

He is known to frequent East Ham and Ilford areas and is normally fit and well but concerns were raised after he had not been seen.
