The crash closed the tunnel for most of last night

A car thief has escaped police capture despite crashing their vehicle in the Dartford Tunnel on Wednesday night.

The crash, which involved three vehicles, ended with a blue Ford Fiesta on its side at around 10.30pm closing the east tunnel to traffic until around 11.50pm

Kent Police said it could not confirm reports that the car had originally been stolen from Orpington.

Before officers could arrive at the scene, the suspect fled the scene on a motorbike, which police say was riding in convoy.

A Kent Police spokesperson said: “No injuries have been reported from the collision and at present no arrests have been made, however enquiries are ongoing.”

Earlier that evening, a post on social media reported a blue Ford Fiesta as stolen.

The post was later updated with the lines “Found crashed in Dartford Tunnel”.
