A SERVICE of thanksgiving for the life of a former county leader is to take place next month.

The event to honour the memory of Sir Sandy Bruce-Lockhart OBE is to be held at Canterbury Cathedral at 11am on Thursday, November 27.

The former leader of Kent County Council (KCC) died, aged 66, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was leader of the council from 1997 until he retired in 2005, and was English Heritage chairman until his death. KCC chairman Peter Lake said: "He was a true reformer of local government and public services and devoted enormous time and energy to Kent County Council during the eight years he was leader."

Just before his death, Sir Sandy attended the opening in July of Lullingstone Roman Villa following a £1.3 million refit.

Due to the large numbers likely to attend the November service, entrance to the cathedral will be by ticket only. To request a ticket, write to the Civic Office, County Hall, Maidstone, ME14 1XQ, call 01622 694067 or 01622 694316, or email sblmemor

ial@kent.gov.uk.

Donations should be sent to The Heart of Kent Hospice c/o Viner & Sons Ltd, 54 High Street, West Malling ME19 6LU.
