A GREAT, great grandmother has celebrated her 100th birthday with all five generations of her family.

Clara Elizabeth Broad (nee Isabell), from Northfleet, held a family celebration on Saturday after reaching the landmark age last Thursday.

She was joined by her five daughters, 15 grand children, 20 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren at a family gathering at The Granby Hotel, The Hill, Northfleet.

Mrs Broad was born in Northfleet on April 2 1909 and has lived in the area all of her life. On February 18 1928 she married Charlie Broad at St Botolph's Church, the Hill, Northfleet, and dedicated her life to taking care of her children.

Her daughter Shirley Hewson, 76, from Gravesend, said: "She's very patient and mentally she's very bright. It's only because her hip wearing out that she's house bound. She's very able and is still does a lot of cooking for herself.

"She was a keen gardener and everybody who saw her garden remarked on how nice it always was."

Mrs Hewson puts her mother's long life down to 'good old-fashioned hard work.'

She said: "She was always very busy and hard working and in those days you did everything by hand. She did all her washing by hand and polished the floors by hand.

"She has been a marvellous mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She still has the same patience and they all respect her. All the children are very good to her.
