Comet goes under leaving Gravesend staff in limbo

Staff at electrical retailer Comet in Gravesend are awaiting to hear the store’s fate after the company was placed in administration on Friday (2).
The store in Imperial Business Park, Thames Way, employs 16 people and is one of 236 shops under threat after Deloitte were appointed to manage the business.
While the administrators seek a buyer to preserve the 6,611 people employed by Comet, stores are being kept open and all employees will continue to be paid.
A spokesman for Deloitte said: “Comet has been battling the changing landscape of the electrical retail sector for many years. It has become increasingly difficult for it to compete with online retailers who don’t face the same overheads such as store rents and business rates.”
Comet is the latest victim on the high street to go into administration, following the demise of Clinton Cards and Peacocks earlier this year.
