A man charged with the murder of Greenhithe schoolgirl Claire Tiltman 21 years ago appeared in Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Colin Ash-Smith, from Swanscombe, did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody.

The 45-year-old is next due to appear on Monday at Maidstone Crown Court.

Claire was stabbed more than 40 times an alleyway off London Road, Greenhithe in January 1993.

She was walking to a friend’s house not far from her family home in Woodward Terrace.
