A Dartford man who broke his back after falling off a balcony in Turkey has returned to England but his mother remains unable to fly home until she pays his medical bill.

Charlie Smith, 25, is being treated at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, which has a specialist spinal injuries unit, after his family and friends raised £6,000 to fly him back.

The family’s insurance claim with Virgin was not valid due to a clause against claims involving balcony falls.

Mum Heather, from Gravesend, needs to pay about half of the £11,500 medical bills before she can leave Turkey.

She said: “I have to pay £5,000 before I can leave, I am trying to see what I can do. It’s a nightmare.”
