Smash between car and lorry has caused major problems in and out of Kent this morning

Motorists are facing major delays on both sides of the Dartford Crossing this morning - with a crash closing the bridge and delays likely to extend throughout the morning.

The smash between a car and a lorry took place on the Kent side of the crossing at around 4am morning and has caused the QEII Bridge to be closed for traffic.

Traffic is being diverted by using a contraflow through the tunnels. Southbound traffic is being diverted through the east tunnel and northbound traffic will continue to use the west tunnel at the Dartford Crossing.

Although two lanes are open in each direction and a contraflow in operation through the tunnels delays in the area are severe and drivers are encouraged to check conditions before they set out and plan their journeys to avoid the area if possible.

Highways England says it is working hard with the police to reopen the road as soon as is safe to do so; this will probably be into the afternoon.

Signs and signals have been set across the network to warn drivers on approach that there are delays ahead.

It is having an impact on the surrounding A2 and Dartford’s roads.
