Dartford Crossings closed in both directions due to security alert

The Dartford Crossing is currently closed in both directions due to a security alert.

A man has been arrested by Kent Police after police were called to reports of a man behaving unusually. Officers also located a suspicious item.

The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and the tunnels were both closed at around 4.30pm. No traffic is approaching the tunnel, and toll booths are empty.

Traffic is now queuing up to five miles in both directions in Essex and Kent. Vehicles travelling across the river to Essex are being stopped at Junction 2, for the Darenth Interchange.

Rumours online are circulating that a bomb disposal team are on site.

The Highways Agency say there is no estimation as to when the crossings will re-open.
