Dartford MP Gareth Johnson has slammed the decision to close the town’s Waitrose store.

The supermarket chain has said it will trade until the end of February and would then vacate the premises in the Orchards Shopping Centre when its lease expires at the end of March.

Dartford residents hope to reverse the decision and have started a petition to try and get Waitrose to change its mind, which has received almost 500 signatures so far.

Mr Johnson said: “I have spoken to Waitrose about the proposed closure and made my disappointment clear to them. I hope they may be able, even at this stage, to salvage the store.

“Waitrose have informed me that every one of the 128 employees at the store will be offered alternative employment in other local stores.

“It has been struggling to make a profit since it opened in 2004.”
