Former mayor of Gravesham and honorary Freeman of the Borough Frank Marvel has died aged 84.

Mr Marven served as a borough councillor for 37 years and was awarded an MBE in 2007 for his services on the council and with the Scout movement.

As well as serving Pelham ward and then Woodlands Ward the father of two was a Kent County Council councillors and Mayor of Gravesham in 1982.

Cllr David Turner said: “I served on the council with Frank for over 30 years. He acted as my mentor for some time and was always kind and constructive.

“His service to the scout movement over many decades was legendary, he placed immense value on the development scouting provides for youngsters and he always fought anything that might thwart the movement. All in all he was a dedicated servant of Gravesham: He loved his borough and he’ll be missed by it.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced soon.
