Ebbsfleet avoid FA Trophy banana skin

A last minute from Michael Thalassitis helped Ebbsfleet avoid an FA Trophy upset against Whitstable Town.

Fleet came from behind to win 2-1 against their Ryman One South rivals to progress to the third round.

Dan Keyte had put Whitstable in front but Anthony Cook pulled the visitors to level to ensure it was all square at half-time.

Thalassitis scored the winner when his cross beat home goalkeeper Luke Watkins, who had produced a number of remarkable saves.

Ebbsfleet started slowly on a difficult pitch and Keyte gave his side the lead after 19 minutes.

He drilled a low shot past Preston Edwards inside the near post.

Fleet tried to hit back but were let down by Billy Bricknell’s wayward shooting.

But Cook equalised before the break with a goal of real individual quality.

He turned Ross Webb inside out before racing into the penalty area and firing into the corner.

Whitstable were in touching distance of a replay when Thalassitis dug out a cross from the right and the ball floated all the way over the despairing Watkins, whocould not prevent it nestling in the corner of the net.
