A family has been left devastated after a Staffy ran into their garden and killed their cat.

Tammy Backhouse was in her house in The Warren, Gravesend, when she saw a boy holding a dog’s lead in the street.

“I heard a noise in my back garden and I said to him the dog might be there,” Tammy said. “Then I heard my neighbour shouting ‘Get the dog, it’s got the cat’. The dog had chewed through our gate and attacked our cat Basil. He died straight away.”

Tammy says the boy then ran into her neighbour’s garden, grabbed the black and white Staffordshire Bull Terrier and ran away.

Husband Dean said: “Speaking to dog walkers they tell me this is the third time they have heard about a cat being killed by a dog matching this description.”

The family of five have been shaken by the loss of Basil.

“My children have cried themselves to sleep each night,” Dean said. “We want anyone else who has had this happen to come forward so we can prove this is not an isolated incident.”

Kent Police said they were investigating the incident.
