PANTO star took after her windswept character Dorothy as she braved gale-force winds to turn on the Christmas lights.

Actress Laura Hamilton, star of Gravesend's Wizard of Oz, switched on the town centre lights last Saturday.

The children's TV presenter was joined by former EastEnders star David Spinx as the Wizard, Channel Five's Gabriella Bradshaw as the Wicked Witch and Gravesham town mayor Bronwen McGarrity to launch the festive season.

Cheered on by shoppers, the cast paraded through the town centre in a special trailer drawn by a tractor. Ms McGarrity completed the switch-on, before wishing everyone a safe and fun Christmas. She said: "We have always had a very good fun Christmas in the town and I'm sure that will be the case this year."

She hoped predictions of a white Christmas would come true, before the crowd were treated to a flurry of fake snow. The Wizard of Oz opens at the Woodville Halls on December 18 and runs until January 2. Tickets can be booked by calling the box office on 01474 337 774.
